The protection rating of a three-phase asynchronous motors is denoted by “IP” followed by two digits. The first digit represents the dust protection level, and the second represents the water protection level. Different protection ratings are suitable for different operating environments. Customers should select the appropriate rating based on the dust, humidity, precipitation, and corrosiveness of their specific application. Our company’s mainstream models cover the three core ratings of IP
44, IP54, and IP55. The specific differences and selection recommendations are as follows:

IP44: The first digit (4) indicates a dust protection level of 4, preventing solid foreign objects with a diameter of ≥1 mm from entering the motor; the second digit (4) indicates a water protection level of 4, preventing water splashes from any direction from entering. It is suitable for indoor, dry environments free of dust and water exposure, such as machine tools and small mechanical equipment in standard workshops. It offers lower costs and is suitable for general light industrial applications.
IP54: The first digit indicates a dust protection rating of 5, providing complete protection against dust ingress (with stricter dust-tight sealing), ensuring motor operation is not affected by dust accumulation; the second digit indicates a water protection rating of 4, protecting against splashing water. It is suitable for workshop environments with minimal dust and humidity but no direct water exposure, such as textile mills, food processing plants, and general warehouse equipment. It offers the widest range of applications and is the most commonly used protection rating for export.
IP55: The first digit indicates Level 5 dust protection, and the second digit indicates Level 5 water protection. It prevents low-pressure water jets from entering the motor from any direction. Suitable for outdoor, open-air environments that are damp, dusty, or subject to light water spray, such as outdoor water pumps, mining equipment, agricultural machinery, and port machinery. It offers superior weather resistance and can withstand harsh outdoor conditions.
If the customer’s operating conditions involve corrosive gases or oil contamination, we can customize a higher IP56 protection rating or use stainless steel enclosures with anti-corrosion coatings. We will provide free recommendations for the most suitable protection rating based on the customer’s operating environment, installation location, and climatic conditions to ensure the motor’s long-term stable operation and protection against environmental damage.
